Recent research by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the charity Orbis has revealed extremely high rates of glaucoma among Hong Kong residents. The study, which utilized advanced AI-driven screening technology, found that 8% of those tested had this irreversible eye disease.
The study screened over 1,100 residents and discovered that 8% had glaucoma, much higher than the 3.8% prevalence found in a 2006 study in Guangzhou. 93% of those diagnosed were unaware they had the disease.
The screenings used a patented technology called ROTA (Retinal nerve fibre layer Optical Texture Analysis) which significantly improves the accuracy of glaucoma diagnosis.
The groundbreaking ROTA technology not only improves glaucoma detection but also sets the stage for its use worldwide. This initiative by HKU and Orbis could transform eye care, making early detection and treatment more accessible to all.
Stay tuned for updates on how this innovative technology is helping to combat glaucoma and other eye diseases globally.
